Why a Whale?

Why does a whale appear in almost all my social media names and on all my logos? There’s no mysterious story behind this whale. I’m not even a member of any whale conservation society, though I do support the cause.

It’s much simpler than that. It all comes down to my tattoo. That’s the thing with tattoos—you spend a long time pondering and nurturing an idea. You look for signs, and then bam—you just know it’s right! The whale came to me just like that. It instantly became a part of me. I wanted it to show up somewhere else too. So, it became the logo for my knitted creations and a part of my social media handles.

The process of choosing the tattoo wasn’t simple. However, once I settled on the whale, it felt so right. I wanted to preserve its image in my logo and website name.

Over time, I’ve received numerous compliments and inquiries about the whale. People are curious and often share their own tattoo stories. This creates a sense of community and connection. It’s incredible how something as personal as a tattoo can extend its influence. It touches others and sparks meaningful interactions.

They say a whale symbolizes tranquility, stability, love of life, inner strength, depth, and wisdom. To some extent, these traits are present in me too. On the other hand, it’s said that whales can go 100 days without sleeping. They can also go up to 10 months without eating. Here, the whale and I have some fundamental disagreements. However, when a whale does eat, it consumes a million calories a day. In that, we find a lot in common.

In the end, the whale isn’t just a tattoo or a logo. It’s a part of my story and a reminder of the qualities that always attract my attention. It serves as a unique symbol that represents a piece of who I am and what I value.

And although the lives of whales are not exactly my area of interest, they are more of a symbol for me. Nonetheless, I highly recommend Nick Pyenson’s wonderful book, “Spying on Whales”

    Random musings.
Upon marrying my second husband my surname became “Whale”. Shortly after our marriage we purchased a caravan and travelled Australia for 5-6 years. During this time I frequently used “The Migratory Whales” as a sign off to emails etc. It just seemed to fit because we were always on the moove. Love your whale. It is beautiful.

Oh, I love that — The Migratory Whales🐋 Sounds like an incredible chapter — 5–6 years on the move must’ve been full of stories! Thanks for sharing that, Judy — and it made me smile 🫶🏻
