So Snowberry Socks

To my surprise, I’ve realized that creating knitting patterns is totally my thing. I dive right in: stitch calculations, charts, video tutorials, layout design—everything. I want each pattern to be something that I’d enjoy knitting myself, with clear instructions and a flow that feels natural. The So Snowberry Socks bring together texture and classic style. I wanted a design that balances focus with relaxation: moments that require concentration (like the bobbles) alternate with stretches of smooth stockinette, then back to attention with the heel, followed by more meditative knitting all the way to the toe. I think I’ve hit the mark this time. And personally? I had an absolute blast working on this pattern. I think the photos capture just how much I love this project.

The name So Snowberry Socks didn’t come out of nowhere, either. Just as I was working on the bobbles, my wonderful partner, Gunta, came back from a walk (yes, she covers the “healthy lifestyle” part for both of us, while I’m deep in pattern writing) with a few branches from a snowberry bush. And it clicked—these bobbles are those berries!

Pattern Details

So Snowberry Socks are knit from the cuff down using circular needles. We start with a decorative ribbing, then add a bit of texture with twisted stitches and bobbles, and finish off the rest in smooth stockinette. The heel is some kind of blend of a Strong heel and Short Rows heel, a style I like to call the “Feel the Heel” for its snug and comfy fit, especially perfect for a high instep. You’ll find 8 video links throughout the pattern to help with all the key techniques.

The leg length is flexible—go with a standard height or a shorter look. And we finish things off with a wedge-shaped toe, closed with the seamless Kitchener stitch.

Yarn Choice

My first sample was knit in Drops Nord, and I loved everything about it—except the color. So, for my next sample, I ordered my favorite yarn, Filcolana Arwetta Classic, in the shade Marzipan. At the start, I had some doubts—Arwetta seemed a bit too smooth for this project. Drops Nord had a soft fluffiness right from the beginning. But as usual, after washing, Arwetta revealed all its best qualities. A light halo appeared, and the socks became incredibly soft, which suits the So Snowberry Socks perfectly.

I can’t wait to see these socks knit in different shades and with other yarns. I think they’ll look amazing in a variety of styles!

The Finished Design

When I first came up with this design, I have to admit—I wasn’t entirely sure the result would turn out as I envisioned. But as soon as I finished the heel, I knew it was all coming together. Of course, impostor syndrome still keeps me from viewing my work too objectively (you know how it is 😊), but even that can’t stop me from thinking these socks truly turned out just right!
