So Sporty Socks
It all started as a bit of a surprise – the idea to create a detailed So Sporty Socks pattern. Honestly, I never saw myself as a pattern author. I’m the one who loves knitting from others’ patterns, not making my own.
But here we are! On my screen now is a comprehensive, step-by-step PDF guide, along with two substantial YouTube videos. Yes, it’s a complete package: text + video.
How So Sporty Socks Came to Be
So, how did it all begin? I’ve knitted short sporty socks with a heel tab multiple times. Every time I shared a finished pair on Instagram, I got questions about how to knit the cuff. I would always send back links to YouTube channels of those who had already explained the process in detail. However, the questions kept coming.
Then, it happened again. I posted my first So Sporty Sock (they didn’t have that name back then), and once again, I got asked how to knit the heel tab.
At that moment, something clicked. I thought, why not make a video myself? The rest is a bit of a blur 😁. And here I am today, admiring the fruits of my labor.
Why I Made This Pattern Free
I didn’t invent the knitting technique, of course – it’s all been done before. I combined what I knew and adapted it to my needs to create this pattern.
Of course, the first attempt is always a bit rough. The videos are quite long. I wasn’t ready to do voiceovers, so I added captions (which turned out to be quite the task). Moreover, the PDF guide is thorough but doesn’t cover multiple sizes.
Considering all this, and the fact that I’m going on vacation to my beloved Latvia in three days, I decided to make So Sporty Socks pattern freely available – in honor of summer, vacation, and because the world needs free patterns 😉.
I would love your feedback, comments, and reactions. Please tag me on Instagram @keenwhale and use the hashtag #so_sporty_socks. Additionally, your likes and subscriptions on my very new YouTube Сhannel would also mean a lot to me. Anything that can cheer up an anxious pattern-releasing blogger is welcome. And yes, please share the links – I’d love for as many people as possible to knit these socks!
The pattern is designed for 72 stitches and a size 39-40 (EU). I knitted with 2.0 mm needles.
In the pattern, you’ll find:
- All steps for knitting the sporty cuff with a heel tab. I’ll explain how to do a provisional cast-on with waste yarn, knit short rows, and join the provisional cast-on edge with the main row.
- Instructions for knitting and shaping a reinforced heel, a simple stitch pattern for the sock front, and how to integrate the Arch Support section.
- We’ll also knit a wedge toe and close it with the Kitchener stitch.
All of this is supported by detailed videos in two parts. Links to the videos are included in the guide.

so sporty! so great, but also… sooooo smaaaaalllll. how’s the math for scaling up to a men’s 12/13 (eu 45/46) double wide? if it’s pretty easy, these would be a winning pattern for me. guess i’ll be investigating gauge on my needles.

Thank you for your kind words! The pattern is designed to show the basic principles of knitting these socks, so scaling up to a larger size is quite flexible. You can increase the number of cast-on stitches and lengthen the foot without needing any complex calculations. I didn’t include specific sizing calculations this time, which is why I’ve made the pattern available for free. However, I might create a more detailed version in the future that includes sizing for all foot sizes. Stay tuned! 😊

Thank you very much for your pattern. I am a knitter of German short rows heel stockings, and I find the tongue heel fascinating. I will try your instructions that correspond to my foot size. Greetings from Argentina and happy Holidays!🤩
